5 Things You Must Know in India Today – 25 Oct 2026

India Daily Briefing, 25 October 2026: markets, Jio IPO and festive sales

Markets are under pressure from costly crude and a weak rupee, Jio’s record IPO has closed with heavy institutional demand, and the festive shopping season is running hot. Here are the five things worth knowing in India today.

1. Markets slide for a fourth day as crude and the rupee weigh

Nifty ended Friday at 22,600 and the Sensex at 73,123.83, extending a four-session losing streak. Nifty lost about 2.4% over the week. Brent crude crossed $114 a barrel and the rupee weakened past 94.90 against the dollar. Foreign investors were net sellers for a tenth straight week, though at a slower pace, while domestic institutions kept buying. Earlier this month, the RBI had raised the repo rate by 0.25 percentage points to 5.50%.

Why it matters: expensive crude and a weak rupee push up fuel, transport and imported-goods costs, and those can reach shop shelves. Higher rates also mean costlier borrowing for small businesses.

2. Jio’s record IPO draws heavy demand

Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213 crore issue, priced at ₹1,065–₹1,119 per share, closed on Friday after being subscribed about 22 times overall. Qualified institutional buyers bid roughly 70 times their quota, while retail investors subscribed about 2.7 times. Allotment is due on 26 October, and listing is planned for 28 October.

Why it matters: institutions queued up far more aggressively than retail investors did. Listing day will show how the market actually prices India’s largest public issue.

3. Festive e-commerce gets a very strong start

Consultancy Redseer estimates online sales of around ₹24,000 crore in the first two days of the festive season, roughly six times a normal day, across 8–9 crore orders. Mobile phones were the biggest category. Shoppers from Tier 2 cities and rural areas made up nearly two-thirds of customers, and first-time online shoppers doubled compared with last year.

Why it matters: festive demand is spreading well beyond the metros, which makes smaller towns core customers for online sellers.

4. Quick commerce pulls festive shopping toward speed

Flipkart says its quick-commerce service, Flipkart Minutes, saw 3.5 times its usual orders in the opening hour of the sale. Amazon says its Amazon Now service delivers within minutes in more than 120 cities.

Why it matters: shoppers are getting used to buying at the last minute, which squeezes neighbourhood stores and slower delivery models.

5. Sarvam AI is reportedly eyeing a $3 billion valuation

The Economic Times reported on 13 October that the Bengaluru startup is in talks to raise $250–300 million, which would double its June valuation of $1.5 billion. The round is not confirmed, and the terms could change.

Why it matters: if it closes, it would show strong investor appetite for India-built AI and signal where startup money is heading.
