What is Jio Platforms?

Jio Platforms is the technology and digital arm of Reliance Industries. It holds Reliance's telecom business through Reliance Jio Infocomm, along with its digital services such as home broadband and enterprise solutions. By 31 March 2026, Jio's customer base had reached about 524 million across India, and Jio is also among the world's largest providers of fixed wireless home broadband.

How much money do you need to apply?

One lot is 12 shares. At the upper price of ₹1,119, that is ₹13,428. A retail investor can apply for up to 14 lots, which is 168 shares or roughly ₹1.88 lakh. Applying for more than that places you in the high net-worth category, where allotment works differently and the competition is different too.

Eligible Reliance Industries shareholders (those holding shares on the record date set by the company) have a separate shareholder category, and employees have their own reservation with a discount. Check the RHP for the exact rules before you apply under any special category.

What is the Jio IPO GMP?

GMP stands for grey market premium. It is the unofficial extra price at which IPO shares trade before they list. Around the time the issue opened, reports put it at roughly ₹250 to ₹275 per share, or about 22 to 25 percent above the upper price band.

That sounds exciting, but please treat it carefully. The grey market is unregulated, GMP changes every day, and it can fall quickly if market mood changes. It shows sentiment, not the real listing price. Never apply based on GMP alone.

Positives: why many investors are interested

1. A market leader with a huge customer base

Jio is the largest mobile operator in India by subscribers. A large, loyal customer base gives it steady monthly revenue, which is rare and valuable.

2. Strong profits and cash generation

For FY26, Jio Platforms reported consolidated revenue of about ₹1,46,885 crore and profit after tax of about ₹30,049 crore. In the April to June 2026 quarter, profit was about ₹7,764 crore, up roughly 9 percent from a year earlier.

3. Room to grow beyond mobile calls and data

Home broadband, enterprise digital services and AI-led services are the growth areas people talk about most. If these succeed, Jio earns more per customer without needing to add millions of new ones.

4. Lower debt after the IPO

The company plans to use most of the money raised, about ₹27,500 crore, to repay borrowings of its subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm. Less debt means lower interest cost and a stronger balance sheet.

5. Strong parentage and investor backing

Jio is part of the Reliance group and already counts global technology companies such as Meta among its shareholders. Strong backing improves access to capital, partnerships and distribution through the wider Reliance ecosystem.

6. Potential tariff increases

Mobile tariffs in India are low compared with many countries. If tariffs rise over time, the revenue earned per user (ARPU, which stood around ₹214 in the March 2026 quarter) could improve.

Negatives: risks you should know before applying

1. The valuation is high

At the upper price band, Jio Platforms is valued at around ₹10.3 lakh crore, which works out to roughly 33 times its FY26 earnings. A high valuation means good news is already expected. If growth falls short, the share price may have less room to rise.

2. Heavy dependence on licences and spectrum

A telecom company needs government licences and radio spectrum to operate. Delays, non-renewal or high spectrum costs can affect the business.

3. One subsidiary drives most of the business

A major share of revenue and profit comes from Reliance Jio Infocomm. If that business faces trouble, Jio Platforms feels it directly.

4. Competition and pricing pressure

Other large telecom companies compete for the same customers. A price war or aggressive offers can hurt profits.

5. The money mainly goes to debt, not new growth

This is a fresh issue, but the main purpose is repaying loans. That strengthens the balance sheet, but it is not fresh funding for a big new expansion plan.

6. Tariff increases are not guaranteed

A lot of the optimistic view depends on tariffs rising. If increases are delayed or customers resist, earnings may grow slower than expected.

7. Listing gains are never certain

Even a strong GMP does not guarantee a profit on listing day. Market conditions can change between the closing date and the listing date.

What are market experts saying?

Many brokerages have given a "subscribe" view, mostly for long-term investors, pointing to Jio's market leadership, cash generation and growth areas. The same reports also flag valuation, regulation, competition and related-party dealings as key risks. Remember that brokerage ratings are opinions, not promises, and they are often positive around large IPOs.

Who should consider applying, and who should be careful?

It may suit you if you can stay invested for several years, you understand the telecom business, and you are investing money you do not need soon.

Be careful if you only want a quick listing-day gain, you plan to borrow money to apply, or you will need this money within the next year or two.

Ask yourself these five questions first:

  1. Am I applying for the business, or only because of the GMP?
  2. Can I hold the shares for three to five years even if the price stays flat?
  3. Do I understand the risks listed above?
  4. Is this money I can afford to leave invested?
  5. Have I read the official prospectus, not just social media posts?

How to apply for the Jio IPO

  1. Open your broker or bank app and go to the IPO section.
  2. Select Jio Platforms and enter the number of lots. Choosing the cut-off price is the simplest option for most retail investors.
  3. Enter your UPI ID and approve the mandate request on your phone before the closing time.
  4. After allotment, check your status on the registrar's website or in your broker app. If you are not allotted shares, the blocked amount is released in your account.
